Magnolia

 

Botanical Name: Magnolia officinalis

Family: Magnoliaceae

Description: 6m/20ft woody shrub large pink/white bell like flowers April-May

Native to: Western China

Cultivation: Fertile slightly acidic soil. Plenty of sun and water

Parts Used: Bark

Actions: Anti-inflammatory, aromatic, diaphoretic, stimulant, tonic

Constituents: Lignans: magnolide

Volatile oil: Lignans –magnolol, hinokiol, monoterpenyl magnolol. Sesquiterpene -eudesmol

Respiratory: Asthma  

Digestive: Diarrhoea  

Other Notes: One of the first plants in history, which uses insects to pollinate flowers in order to reproduce
