Dark Faeries

Adaro – Soloman Islands

These are a type of merman who live in the sun and travel on rainbows or waterspouts. They shoot humans with poisonous fish and are said to be created by the evil side of mankind.

 

Baginis – Australian

These are half animal half human women with claws. They capture men for sex and sometimes kill them

 

Baku – Japanese

These are creatures that steal dreams and cause people to have nightmares

 

Baykok – American Chippewa

This spirit is found in the area of the Great Lakes. He flies shrieking a song of death. His appearance is that of a skeleton with translucent skin and red eyes. He kills warriors with invisible arrows or by clubbing them to death and then he consumes their liver.

Its name is derived from Bakaak which means bones draped in thin skin

 

Bean Fionn – Ireland

She is a white lady found in streams and rivers. She drags children into the water and drowns them. It is said she takes a life every seven years.

 

Bendith y Mamau – Welsh

A cross between fairies and hobgoblins they are known child snatchers. If a child returns after being snatched they will only remember the fairy music, however they are treated well.

They envy beauty themselves being short, with twisted limbs, grey skin, with a big nose and ears. Their hair is thick and wiry usually ginger in colour.

They like to be called “Mothers blessing”

They belong to the Unseely Court of Carmarthenshire

 

Boabhan Sith – Scottish

These female vampires are found in the glens and mountains and prey on male travellers often killing them. They can appear as ravens or beautiful women dressed in white or green however they have cloven feet.

 

Bogey – English

The name bogey was at one time a name given to the devil, although it probably is old English for to brag. It is said they kidnapped children for the devil to torture although more often than not they simple torment children and scare them. They especially go after naughty children – the bogeyman is the worse kind of bogey

They live in dark places and appear as shadowy people or black dogs.

 

Bokwus – American Kwakiutl

This is a wild man of the woods responsible for drowning people. He lives in an invisible house with the souls of those he has killed. He also tried to persuade people to eat his food that makes them turn into a creature like him.

 

 

Dama Dagenda – Papua New Guinea

These are spirits of the jungle who inflict travellers with sores. They can only speak the languages of the local tribes and if you talk or sing in a language they do not know it confuses them.

 

Dames Blanches – French

These are found in Normandy and the Lorraine region. Their name simple translates as white lady. They can be found in narrow places and beg travellers to dance with them. Those who dances are allowed to pass unharmed those who refuse are tormented.

Gello – Greek

These female vampires kidnap or attack children in order to drink their blood.

 

Grindylow - Yorkshire England

They are a type of water spirit with long arms that eat children

 

Ieles – Eastern European

These appear as a type of cat that walks on its hind legs. They live at crossroads but cannot go into the middle of the crossroads. They suck blood from their victims and take leg bones from those who step inside their circle. They replace the bone with a wooden spoke but will return the bone if the person returns a year later.

 

IncubusEuropean

These are male spirits who sexually attack women when they are asleep. If the women become pregnant from the encounter than the child will be a wizard.

Incubus is derived from the Latin meaning nightmare

Many believe them to be demons or fallen angels.

 

Jalpari – Indian

She is a female water spirit who kills men she cannot seduce. Offerings of flowers and animals are given to her.

 

Jenny Greenteeth – English

Other Names: Ginny Greenteeth, Peg O’Nell,  Wicked Jenny

This is a river hag who drowns children or the elderly as they walk by. Described as having green skin, long hair and sharp teeth.

Her name is also given to duckweed, a plant that can form over a body of water.

 

Kallikantzari - Macedonian

Goblins that live underground but appear between Christmas and Epiphany to try and cut down the world tree

Their appearance can vary from being a short hairy man to dog or centaur

They only come out at dark and can easily be distracted

 

Kelpie – Scottish

This a water horse found in lochs and streams. It can appear in various guises the most common being a grey horse; if a traveller tries to ride him then he will rear and run into the water drowning its rider.

It warns people of approaching storms by wailing and howling.

It can also appear as a hairy man who lurks by rivers strangling passer bys.

The kelpies’ power is said to be in its bridle – if someone can obtain the bridle then they will gain control over the kelpie. As the kelpie has the strength of ten horses it was a prize worth winning.

It is said the Macgregor clan owned a kelpie bridle.

 

 

Linchetti – Italian

These are another type of nightmare spirit who sits on a sleeper’s chest preventing them breathing. They can kill babies and the elderly.

They enter houses via keyholes.

They are found in Tuscany

 

Mal-de-Mar – English and Brittany

These are found of the coast of Cornwall and Brittany.

Their name mean evil of the sea or seasickness.

They project lights onto rocks causing shipwrecks and then possess the souls of the deceased sailors.

Wreckers may have been responsible for many of these sightings and rumours. Wreckers were humans who shone lights causing shipwrecks (although many shipwrecks were caused purely by natural elements). All contents are shipwrecks are considered fair game to be taken

 

Malingee - Aborginal

A night fairy who will avoid human contact when they can.

They will kill humans they cann't avoid

Their knees are made of stone and knock together

 

 

Nocnitsa – Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovakian

Other Names: Krisky, Plaksy

This is a nightmare hag who torments children. If a knife is placed by the child than the Nocnitsa is scared off.

 

Pamarindo – Italian

This is a type of dwarf who is very fat. He wears red clothes and a fur or copper hat, and he also has copper shoes. His clothes are often stained in animal fat. He takes farmer’s animals and kills and eats them. He compels the animal to follow him by whistle and then leads them off a cliff to their death. He is anti social and will knock over people who get in his way

He is found in the Gemona region of Northern Italy

 

Slaugh – Irish & Scottish

These are normally viewed, as dead that cannot rest – mostly because they have been rejected from heaven and hell. Some of them are sinners.

They fly from the west in groups, which as appear like a flock of birds and try to steal the soul of innocent people. They are troublesome and disruptive.

They are a variation of the wild hunt

 

Spriggans - Cornish, England

They live in remote places

They cause bad weather and destroy crops

 

Succubus – European

This is a female nightmare demon that sexually assaults men in their sleep. They are especially attracted to monks. They will kill the men by making them exhausted or steal his soul. Semen is collected from the men in order to impregnate women.

Succubus is an alternative to the Latin succuba meaning strumpet.

They appearance can vary from beautiful women, to demon like women with wings and cloven feet and horns.

Lilith is considered to be a succubus.

 

Tarogolo – Papua New Guinea

This spirit seduces humans and then cuts off his genitalia.

 

Vadleany – Hungarian

She is a forest spirit who appears as a naked woman with long hair. She seduces men and steals their strength.

It is said she is present when the trees rustle.

These are any spirits that suck blood or take blood from people
