Blood Sacrifice and Suicide Pools

Blood sacrifices symbolise many things.

One of those things is the hope the fresh blood can form an ectoplasm from which the spirit can materialise.

Blood sacrifices were often killed by having their throat cut ear to ear. Effectively making them headless.

Dunters that haunt the peel towers on the English and Scottish borders may by the spirit of the sacrificial victims whose blood was scattered on the foundation stones

Many pools had rituals in order to appease the spirit of the river and allow the body to be retrieved. This included "Singing for the dead body" and floating bread weighted with mercury on the surface, when it sank the body would be recovered

The River Dart is said to claim a life annually: When the river is running loudly it is said to cry out.

Dart, Dart, cruel Dart

Every Year thou must claim'st a heart

Or

Dart, Dart, Wants a Heart

This could simple be that the river sounds louder as the wind is blowing in a storm. A storm that will make the river rise and therefore claim lives as a result.

It is said though that the river may reject a victim if it's the wrong person.

In South Tawton, Devon there is an abandoned limestone quarry in which three pools of water have formed. One of these pools is at the bottom of a sheer cliff. It is said to be bottomless and is home to a runaway horse and cart, it has also claimed the lives of many suicide victims. It is also claimed "The Wren" drowned here.

Many people claim they know they are being called to a particularly body of water to be its next victim whilst others simple accidentally drown there.

On Dartmoor blanket fog can suddenly descend causing travellers to lose their sense of direction and become lost. They become pixy-led or the more modern American term pixylated Mist can also descend suddenly on a beach causing people to become lost and drown

Some waters spirits are said to promise their victims eternally youth. Which is a way is achieved by death itself.

Others simply feel the water spirit wishes to take away a person's pain and suffering
