Crossroads

Crossroads are believed to be the boundaries where the worlds meet. Dark magic was said to be practised at them hence the saying "Dirty work at the crossroads"

640 AD St Eligius condemned those who placed lights, springs and trees where three ways met.

Uncultivated land by a crossroads is sometime known as No Mans Land, Devil's Acre or Devil's Plot.

Gallows trees and gibbets were often found at crossroads linking them to Odin as the hanging man

Crossroads are haunted by fairies, vampires etc

In India Rudra the god of evil powers rules them

In England black dogs are often sighted by them

In Greece they were sacred to the goddess Hecate

Witches are said to summon the devil at them

At one time people who committed suicide were buried at crossroads with a stake through their heart so that they could not return as a ghost
