Hylton Castle
A brownie known as the Cauld Lad of Hilton lived here. He messed up that which was tidy and tidied up things that were untidy. The servants banished him by leaving him a green cloak and hood by a kitchen fire. He tried them on and when dawn broke he vanished for every crying, "Here's a cloak, and here's a hood! The Cauld Lad of Hilton will do no more good." It is said his voice can still be heard repeating this saying.
