Amethyst


It is a form of quartz in crystalline or massive form. It contains trace amounts of iron and aluminium.

Hardness: 7

Description: Varies shades of purple.

Found in: Uruguay, Siberia, Africa, USA, Brazil, South Africa, Europe, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Canada, Russia

It is a calming stone with a caring atmosphere about it.

It is a stone of spirituality and contentment

It balances the intellectual, emotional and physical bodies

It brings stability, strength and peace

It is a spiritual stone, helping meditation, and offering protection. Helping people to find their true selves

It is said to help prevent drunkenness and ease a person's anger and frustration.

Physically: it aids the hearing, heart and skeletal system. It is also useful in helping people to overcome addictions.

Other Notes: Neolithic people used amethyst as early as 25,000BC

It is said to be the ninth stone on the breastplate of the high priest of Israel.

Its name comes from the Greek meaning not drunken

In Greek mythology the god Bacchus was angry after he had been insulted and decreed tigers would eat the first person he met. This happened to be amethyst who was on her way to worship at Diana's shrine. Diana turned her into a clear transparent crystal as the tigers pounced. Bacchus was filled with remorse and poured the juice of his grapes over the crystal giving it its colour.
